US military: Iraqi soldiers 'killed by friendly fire'

An air strike by the US-led coalition during an offensive against so-called Islamic State (IS) may have killed Iraqi soldiers, the US military said.
"Initial reports indicate the possibility one of the strikes resulted in the death of Iraqi soldiers," the US military said in a statement.
An officer and nine soldiers died or were wounded in the incident, Iraq's joint operations command said.

At least 29 people died and 60 were wounded in multiple bomb blasts at two bus stations in the northern Nigerian city of Gombe on Wednesday evening, a Red Cross official said.

There was no immediate claim for the bombings but they bore the hallmarks of Islamist jihadi group Boko Haram. At least 50 people died in two bombings at a market in the same city last Friday.

Two aftershocks above 4 Richter scale jolt country

KATHMANDU, MAY 27 - Two aftershocks , measuring above 4 on the Richter scale, have yet again jolted various parts of country including the Capital untill Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Seismological Centre (NSC).

The first aftershock of the day was recorded at 12:03 pm, measuring 4.2 on the Richter. The epicenter of this aftershock was in Dolakha district, shared Lok Bijaya Adhikari, Chief of NSC.

India heatwave toll passes 1,000

INDIA, MAY 27 - The death toll in the heatwave sweeping India has passed 1,000, with temperatures nearing 50C (122F) in some areas.

Most deaths have taken place in the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where at least 1,118 people have died since last week.

Reports say at least 24 people have died from the heat in West Bengal and Orissa.

Death toll reaches 5,489 in country

KATHMANDU, APR 30 - The number of death caused by the April 25 earthquake and aftershocks has reached 5,489 across the country, said the Home Ministry.

The National Emergency Operation Centre under the Home Ministry shared this information, adding that people injured in the tremors reached 10,965.

17 Indian pilgrims dead in Dhading accident

KATHMANDU, APR 22 - Seventeen people were killed and several others injured when a bus carrying Indian pilgrims veered off the Prithvi highway and fell some 200 meters down in Dhading district on Wednesday morning. Thirteen were killed on the spot while four others succumbed to injuries on their way to hospital.

KATHMANDU, APR 21 - A group of unidentified people has attacked an advocate here in Nepalgunj on Tuesday.

The group of four to five unidentified individuals attacked Nepalgunj-based advocate Udaya Lal Verma at his law firm at 10 am today morning. Advocate Verma sustained injuries in his head and has been receiving medical treatment at based Teaching Hospital in Nepalgunj.

3 teens commit suicide in Bajhang

BHIMDUTTANAGAR, APR 19 - Three teenage girls have committed suicide en masse by hanging from the same tree in Surma of Bajhang district.

The police have identified the victims as Juntara Pujara, 14, Rekha Pujara, 14 and Kavita Bohara, 15, of Surma VDC of Bajhang district. The girls were six and seven graders of a local school here.

According to the family, they had gone to forest to collect clay for decorating their houses on Friday. But they were found dead hanging from a tree in the forest on Saturday.

The cause behind the suicide is yet to be known, police added. RSS

Man Charged with Rape of 13 years old Girl

Metropolitan Police Circle Maharajgunj has said that Nilkantha Maharjan, 25, of Kathmandu Metropolis-2 has been charged with rape of a 13-year-old girl. 

Husband of the girl's teacher, Maharjan raped the girl twice on April 7, police said. Police registered the case at district court on April 8. According to police, medical check-up of the victim was conducted at TU Teaching Hospital and further investigation is ongoing into the incident.

Prez 'saddened' by Thapa's demise

KATHMANDU, APR 17 - President Ram Baran Yadav has said he is “extremely saddened” by the death of former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa and that it is a “huge loss” for the country.

“Thapa who dedicated his entire life to national politics will forever be remembered for his coordinating role, clear political views, unassailable willpower and a balanced approach,” reads a condolence message delivered by the President on Friday. The message further states that the country lost an experienced statesman.

Thapa passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment for respiratory complications at Gurgaon-based Medanta Hospital in India. He was 88. (source:ekantipur)

Valley announced plastic bag-free zone

KATHMANDU, APR 15 - Marking the Nepali New Year, the government on Tuesday declared Kathmandu valley a polythene bag-free zone.

The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology made the declaration in the presence of stakeholders at Exhibition Road. On the occasion, various government representatives, and other stakeholders expressed their commitments not to use polythene bags which are thinner than 40 microns.

Swine-flu claims another life in Jajarkot

JAJARKOT, APR 15 - Swine flu has claimed one more life in Jajarkot on Wednesday taking the toll to 17.

The individual, identified as Dal Bahadur Shahi, 58, of Talegaun-7, died of the disease early today morning.

The National Public Health Laboratory on Tuesday had confirmed that three of the 10 samples collected from patients in Jajarkot tested positive for swine flu.

Four school girls jump into river after poor results in Nepal

Four school-girls went missing after jumping into the Mahakali river in Darchula district on the Indo-Nepal border on Monday, said a girl who was in their company.

According to Nagariknews.com, the girls aged 13 and 14, apparently jumped into the river after returning from their school, Rastriya Higher Secondary School at Udai in the remote far-western district. They found they had failed in the annual exams, the results for which were made public in then school, said Kamala Daga who said she had also gone to “commit suicide” with the four girls.

Saptari lady kills infant son before attempting suicide

RAJBIRAJ: A woman allegedly took her one-and-half-month-old son's life before attempting suicide following a domestic dispute in Saptari on Sunday. She was saved by her neighbours.

Identified as Shakuntala Sah (21), the woman, who is second wife of Prakash Sah in Rajibiraj-5 of the district, poured kerosene over the infant's body and fatally ignited fire before trying to self-immolate today, according to police.

8 dead‚ 25 hurt in Philippine troops

MANILA: Officials say Philippine troops, backed by attack helicopters and artillery fire, battled with at least 250 Abu Sayyaf militants in the country's restive south, leaving two soldiers and six militants dead.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said Thursday's heavy fighting in Sulu province's Patikul township wounded 15 soldiers and 10 rebels.

Flu-like disease kills three, 500 ill in Jajarkot villages

JAJARKOT, APR 08 - Three persons have died and around 500 others have been taken ill by an unverified disease with syndromes resembling that of a common flu in four VDCs of Jajarkot district this past week.

The disease has been reported in Paink, Nayabada, Sakla and Archhani VDCs, with two deaths confirmed in Paink and one in Archhani, health officials said.

Taxi set on fire in Koteswor-Balkumari

KATHMANDU: The agitating 30-party alliance led by Unified CPN -Maoist has set ablaze a taxi in Koteswor-Balkumari on Tuesday morning. 

The alliance has enforced nationwide general strike today aiming at piling pressure for promulgating a new constitution in the spirit of consensus. The agitators scattered petrol and put aflame the taxi (Ba 1 Ja 1877) of Niraj Baniya, a local of Hetauda, while he was returning to Lalitpur after dropping his relative at the Tribhuvan International Airport. 

Two unidentified demonstrators had stopped the taxi and put it on fire with petrol at 5.15 this morning. 
After a big damage to his vehicle, taxi driver Baniya said he was worrying how to eke out livelihood of his family as it was the only source of income.

KATHMANDU, The first of the three-day strike called the alliance of 30-opposition parties has affected normal life across the country. Several cases of arson and vandalism have been reported while some Maoist leaders have also been arrested by police.

Banda enforcers have set a taxi (Ba 1 Ja 1877) on fire at Balukumari in Koteshwor early this morning while a motorcycle (Ba 66 Pa 7206) was also torched at Bijulibazaar.

It turns out that Home Minister Mahadev Rane (Mahesh Manjrekar) and his associates (Atul Kulkarni) and Ramya Radhakrishnan (Suman Ranganathan) are the people involved in the scam. Ramya kills Sanjay's pregnant wife and her parents by poisoning while Maya, who is also poisoned, and Mango, who was placed on railway track, survive the attack. Arjun who hears the flashback decides to help them.

Indian doctors develop app to monitor heart's health status

A team of doctors here have developed a mobile application through which the health status of heart could be monitored at any time of the day by calculating the risks and giving recommendations on how to avert heart conditions in future. 

The mobile application, named 'Heart Health Meter' (HHM App), was launched at a function here last evening by a team of doctors and IT experts from Madhavbaug -- organization of multidisciplinary cardiac care clinics and hospitals -- on its 50th anniversary. 

Explaining the modalities of the app, Rohit Sane, trustee and MD of Vaidya Sane Trust (the parent organization of Madhavbaug), said through 'HHM App' one can know the current health status of his heart. 

UML leader Ramnath Dhakal passes away

UML politburo member Ramnath Dhakal , who was undergoing treatment at Dhapashi-based Grande Hospital, passed away on Sunday, Hospital Director Dr. Chakra Pandey confirmed.

The UML leader was admitted at the hospital on March 27 after contracting what has been suspected as the swine flu.

“Dhakal’s immunity was dangerously weakened as he was a patient of Tuberculosis and Cancer along with swine flu,” said Dr Pandey.

Malaysian arrested with 11 kg cocaine

KATHMANDU, The Narcotics Control Bureau of Nepal Police arrested a Malaysian woman with 11 kilograms of cocaine from the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Malaysian national Marina Binti Jamaluddin with passport number A 34891381 was apprehended from TIA on Friday night when she was about to leave for Rome, Italy via Doha.
The cocaine, worth Rs. 160 million in the international market, was found concealed in five laptop bags.

Police said that upon investigation she revealed that she had brought the drug from Brazil and had landed in Nepal via Malaysia and New Delhi.

India to build ICP at Pani Tanki

KATHMANDU, APR 04 - Four years after Nepal built the Inland Clearance Depot (ICD) in Kakarvitta, Jhapa, India is set to build an integrated check post ( ICP ) at the bordering town of Pani Tanki. The ICP is expected to ease Nepal’s trade with India and third countries.

Nepal’s Consular General to India Chandra Kumar Ghimire said the southern neighbour informed that it had acquired land for the ICP development and would start construction within a few months.

Elderly woman killed in attack

RAJBIRAJ: An elderly woman was killed and three others were injured after a group of five-six persons attacked them with weapons in Birpur VDC of Saptari today.

Rajawati Devi Raya, 70, of Bripur VDC was killed in the attack, said District Police Office, Saptari. The group attacked the woman after she brought some firewood from her neighbour’s field.

Woman found dead at Pragatitole, Dhumbarahi of the capital

An unidentified woman has been found dead at Pragatitole, Dhumbarahi of the capital on Wednesday morning. After preliminary investigation, police suspect the woman was pushed to death from a window of the house as the semi-naked dead body lies just below the window of her room. 

Police have arrested a man and a woman for their alleged involvement in the murder. According to police source, the arrested youths have said they were together with the woman at night but are unaware about the murder.

Government ready to address Dr KC's demands: Health Minister

KATHMANDU: Minister for Health and Population Khagaraj Adhikari has said the government was ready to address demands put forth by Prof Dr Govinda KC, who is on a fast-onto-death at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, demanding reforms in the entire heath sector.

Minister Adhikari, as a member the talks team formed by the government to negotiate with agitating Dr KC, an orthopaedic surgeon, stated that the government was effortful to seek a solution to the problem. Talking to media persons at his office Monday, the Health Minister said the government was waiting for a report from a taskforce constituted under the convenorship of Prof Dr Kedarbhakta Mathema for giving recommendations for revisions in the health education policy.

4 dead and 3 injured in a road accident

DHADING, MAR 30 - At least four persons died, leaving three seriously injured when a passenger bus collided with micro bus at Jogimara-1 in Dhading district on Monday.

The accident occurred when a passenger bus, Lu 1 Kha 9593, en route to Kapilvastu from Kathmandu collided with a micro bus, Ba 1 Kha 1028, coming from Pokhara at Khutauti Khola in the district.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained. However, of the deceased, two are foreign nationals and two Nepali nationals, it is learnt.
reliminary investigation suggests that the accident occurred because of poor visibility due to thick fog in the highway.

Gunmen kill 15 in Nigeria during tense election

Gunmen killed at least 15 people including an opposition politician near polling stations in northeast Nigeria on Saturday, casting an ominous shadow over the closest electoral contest since the end of military rule in 1999.

The tense race pits President Goodluck Jonathan against former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari for the favour of an electorate divided along a complex mix of ethnic, regional and in some cases religious lines.

Indian Forest Guards Open Fire at Bardia

One person was injured when Indian forest guards from Murtiya range post bordering Bardiya district entered Nepali side and opened fire at locals working on a farm.
Locals Ramesh Lodh, Bheri Lodh, Chopo Lodh and Buddhi Lodh had gone to harvest pulses at a farm of one Sitaram Lodh, when forest guards entered some 500 meters on the Nepali side and opened fire towards them. Ramesh Lodh received injuries to his eye after being hit by a shrapnel.
DSP Dipak Kumar Basnet said that a cartridge has been recovered from the site.
The District Administration Office has summoned an emergency security meeting following the incident.

Nepal risks UK aid cut for ‘endemic corruption'

A UK House panel has suggested that the British government reduce aid to Nepal if the country fails to curb “endemic corruption through effective action”.

The suggestion from the parliamentary committee comes after its Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI), responsible for scrutinising foreign aid of the United Kingdom, showed concerns over corruption in the projects supported by Local Governance and Community Development Programme in November last year.

Swine flu under control: Shukraraj Hospital

KATHMANDU- The number of people infected by swine flu ( H1N1) virus has not increased in the country, according to the Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital. 


Though 100 to 150 patients visit different hospitals for tests of suspected infection, they are not found serious and only five patients are admitted to Hospital.

Nepali And Finnish go missing at Mt. Annapurna

A Nepali and a Finnish went missing from the Mount Annapurna on Wednesday.

According to Gyanendra Shrestha, an official at the Department of Tourism, the missing persons have been identified as Pemba Sherpa (35) of Makalu VDC, Sankhuwasabha and Mika Samuli Mansikka (36) from Finland.

Shrestha informed that the duo had gone to scale the mountain through the Dreamers Destination Trek on March 3.

It has been learnt that they had scaled the mountain yesterday and went missing while descending the mountain today.

RAW: Emergency helicopters buzz Germanwings 4U2595 crash site

Germanwings flight that went off the radar at approximately 11am this morning has crashed in the Alps in southern France near Digne-Les-Bains. It is reported that 148 have been killed after the airplane went off course 50 minutes before the crash at 11:50.

Maoist students hurl stones at Mahat’s vehicle

Students from All Nepal National Independent Students Union (Revolutionary) have pelted stones at Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat’s vehicle at Simpane in Pokhara .

Minister Mahat was on his way to take part in a programme at Salyan VDC in Kaski district, when students from the UCPN (Maoist) affiliated union pelted stones at his vehicle. No damage was caused whatsoever.

Police has arrested ANNISU-R central member Kshitiz Sapkota among Laxmi Prasad Subedi, Netra Chapagain, Dinesh Poudel and Bishal Gurung after the incident.

Rapist gets 15-year jail

LAMJUNG, 

The Lamjung District Court has sentenced a 55-year-old man to 15 years in jail on rape charge.

A single bench of Judge Jagat Narayan Pradhan gave the verdict against Bir Bahadur Sarki of Sundarabazaar-5 on Tuesday. Sarki was convicted of raping a 14-year-old differently abled and mentally challenged girl around two months ago.

The court also slapped the convict with Rs100,000 in fine.

Court Registrar Hari Gopal Gyawali said Sarki was sentenced to 10 years on rape charge and five more years for raping a differently abled minor. Sarki lured the victim to his house and committed the crime on January 15. Police had arrested him the next day as per a complaint lodged by the victim's family.

Netanyahu apologizes to country's Arab minority

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Israel's Arab citizens on Monday for remarks he made during last week's parliament election that offended members of the community.

The move appeared to be an attempt to heal rifts and mute criticism at home and in the United States. Netanyahu drew accusations of racism in Israel, especially from its Arab minority, and a White House rebuke when, just a few hours before polling stations were to close across the country, he warned that Arab citizens were voting "in droves."
