Walk 20 Minutes A Day To Live Longer

You probably have at least an extra 20 minutes in your day, almost every day. If you take that time and go for a short, brisk walk, you may boost your lifespan by up to 30 percent.
According to the new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, University of Cambridge researchers rounded up measurements of weight, height, waist circumference, and the self-reported physical activity levels — or, sometimes, lack thereof — of 334,000 men and women in Europe. They followed up 12 years later and discovered that a relatively moderate amount of activity seemed to reduce mortality rates.
The scientists found that inactivity kills almost twice the number of people each year when compared to obesity (676,000 deaths versus 337,000 deaths, respectively). They also estimated that daily exercise burning around 90 to 110 calories a day could lower a person’s risk of death by 16 to 30 percent.
The effect was stronger for those with normal weights, but overweight and obese people still saw a boost in lifespan. This means that no matter the number on the scale, going from couch potato to light exerciser could produce big benefits.
According to the researchers’ estimates, mortality rates in Europe could drop by 7.5 percent if inactivity was eradicated from the population. Meanwhile, if obesity was eliminated from the same group of men and women, early death tolls would drop by just 3.7 percent.

How Often Should I Shut Down My Computer?

This question gets asked a lot, and unfortunately there’s no easy answer. All sorts of factors must be considered, such as how much power your computer draws vs. how much your electric utility charges per kilowatt hour; how important it is to you that you have immediate access to your computer at all times; and on and on. Essentially, it boils down to your own personal preference. Here are some things to consider:

Electricity Costs:

At a basic level, an average computer uses about 350W of power (including the monitor) or 0.35 kW. (This can vary depending on the size of your machine, what you use it for, etc.) Figure out how much your local utility charges per kilowatt hour, and then do the math to see how much electricity your machine would consume if left on all day. Rates fluctuate based on your city and the time of year, but for the sake of argument, if the utility charges 10 cents per kWh, then it’s costing you roughly $25 per month to run the machine all day. So, unless you’re hopped up on Red Bull and computing constantly, shut it down each night.

Wear and Tear:

Computer parts are designed to be extremely durable and last for years, but as with all machines that have moving parts, things do eventually break down. In a PC, the cooling fans (for the power supply and the CPU) are the primary components that will be in constant use if you never turn the machine off. The fans don’t have to work as hard if the computer is in sleep mode or is not actively running several programs while still powered up, but eventually they’re likely going to give out and will need to be repaired or replaced. Hard drives also continue to spin when the computer is not in use, and it can eventually peter out, too.

Samsung launches Z1 Tizen phone at Rs 5,700

NEW DELHI: Samsung on Wednesday launched its first smartphone using its home-grown Tizen operating system, aimed at breaking the South Korean electronics giant's dependence on Google's Android.

The Samsung Z1, which has 3G capability and a liquid-crystal display, was launched in India with a price tag of Rs 5,700 ($90), the world's largest smartphone maker said in a statement.

The Tizen operating system is a key part of Samsung's campaign to carve out a niche in mobile software and services, to complement its dominant hardware role.

The Samsung Z, which was specially developed by Samsung to run on the Tizen platform, had initially been earmarked for launch in Russia in the second half of last year.

But the launch was pushed back in order to "further enhance the Tizen ecosystem", the company said at the time.

It was the latest in a series of delays for the Tizen rollout, which had originally been scheduled for 2012.

Cristiano Ronaldo was voted the world's best player of the year

For the third time, Cristiano Ronaldo was voted the world's best football player. He hopes it also brought him closer to being remembered as one of the greatest of all time.
Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d'Or in a rout on Monday, racking up more than twice the votes of Lionel Messi, who edged German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into third.
The Real Madrid and Portugal forward's latest hat trick tied him with Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo of Brazil on three FIFA awards. The original Ballon d'Or presented by France Football magazine was won by European standouts Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini and Marco van Basten three times each.
Only Messi's four FIFA awards is ahead of the 29-year-old Ronaldo, whose Madrid team again seems better placed for trophies in 2015 than his rival's Barcelona.
"I want to become one of the greatest players of all time," Ronaldo said through a translator in his acceptance speech. "Of course, this requires a lot of effort and I hope to get there."
Ronaldo retained football's highest individual honor after scoring 61 goals last year. His record tally of 17 in a Champions League season helped Madrid win an unprecedented 10th European Cup title — and overshadowed a relatively disappointing World Cup campaign. He has kept up the pace since FIFA's voting college — national team captains and coaches, plus selected journalists, in more than 180 countries took part — cast ballots in November.

A meditation on the art of not trying

When you’re nervous, how can you be yourself? How can you force yourself to relax? How can you try not to try? It makes no sense, but the paradox may be essential to civilization.

The advice is as maddening as it is inescapable. It’s the default prescription for any tense situation: a blind date, a speech, a job interview, the first dinner with the potential in-laws. Relax. Act natural. Just be yourself. But when you’re nervous, how can you be yourself? How you can force yourself to relax? How can you try not to try?
It makes no sense, but the paradox is essential to civilization, according to Edward Slingerland. He has developed, quite deliberately, a theory of spontaneity based on millenniums of Asian philosophy and decades of research by psychologists and neuroscientists. He calls it the paradox of wu wei, the Chinese term for ‘effortless action.’ Pronounced “ooo-way,” it has similarities to the concept of flow, that state of effortless performance sought by athletes, but it applies to a lot more than sports. Wu wei is integral to romance, religion, politics and commerce. It’s why some leaders have charisma and why business executives insist on a drunken dinner before sealing a deal.
