Five new names picked for CIAA commissioners

A Constitutional Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Friday recommended five new commissioners in the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority. The recommendation is set to give the anti-graft body a full shape for the first time since Surya Nath Uphadhyay retired as chief commissioner in 2006.

The meeting has picked Sabitri Gurung, Dip Basnyat, Nabin Ghimire, Ganesh Kumar Joshi and Raj Narayan Pathak as commissioners. Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki and Commissioner Keshav Baral have been already working at the CIAA for the past two years.

Three Boys Missing for the past three days

Three children belonging to Bhumeswor VDC have gone missing for the past three days.

Prakash Bista (15) and Binod Bista (11) of Bhumeswor-6 and Ashik Bohora, who has been residing in maternal home at Dehimandu, have been disappeared since last Wednesday, said Rajendra Bista.

Relatives of the missing boys have intensified the search but no clue has been found yet, he added.

In-charge of Area Police Office, Patan Jeevan Giri said that he had not received any information about the incident.

Nepalese American fashion designer to create new uniforms for Japanese airline

Prabal Gurung a Nepalese American fashion designer – has been selected by Japan’s largest airline, All Nippon Airways, to create new uniforms for its cabin attendants and ground crew.

The new uniforms which will be unveiled this summer will be worn by 10,000 ANA staff, the New York Daily News reported. Gurung, who is based in New York, is known for dressing up First Lady Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga.

PM sees no meaning in opposition protest

At least 108 people killed in Afghan winter storm

KABUL: Avalanches caused by a heavy winter snow killed at least 108 people in northeastern Afghanistan, an emergency official said Wednesday, as rescuers clawed through debris with their hands to save those buried beneath.

The avalanches buried homes across four northeast provinces, killing those beneath, said Mohammad Aslam Syas, the deputy director of the Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority. The province worst hit appeared to be Panjshir province, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of the capital, Kabul, where the avalanches destroyed or damaged around 100 homes, Syas said.

Bus overturns in northwestern China‚ killing 22

BEIJING: A bus overturned on a highway in China's far western region of Xinjiang, killing 22 people and injuring 38, state media said Wednesday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the accident occurred shortly before midnight on Tuesday night in Kashgar prefecture. It said all of the injured were hospitalized and the cause of the accident was being investigated.

China has a high road fatality rate, and traffic accidents killed more than 62,000 people in the country in 2011. Inexperienced drivers and overloaded buses and trucks are common.

3 students shot and wonded on campus of Florida university

Three students were shot and wounded at an historically black university in Florida on Monday and two people, at least one of them also a student, were taken into custody in connection with the incident, a school official said.

2 school girls injured in Basantapur acid attack

WhatsApp starts voice calling feature to Android users

11 killed in train accident in India

A train derailed after hitting a boulder that had fallen on the track in southern India on Friday, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens, officials said. Railways Minister Suresh Prabu said the boulder fell from a nearby hill and derailed nine coaches and one food car. At least 42 people were hospitalized, including 17 in serious condition, after the accident near Bangalore, the capital of southern Karnataka state, police officer Ranbir Sharma said.

Air strikes in Syria kill at least 20 Islamic State fighters

US-led air strikes killed at least 20 Islamic State fighters in northeastern Syria near the border with Iraq, an organization monitoring the conflict said on Friday.

Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said 19 explosions were heard during the air strikes in al-Shadadi in the northeastern province of Hasaka on Thursday. One civilian was also killed in the air strikes, he said.

47 Myanmar soldiers dead and dozens more wounded in clashes with Kokang rebels.

Days of clashes with rebels from a minority ethnic group in northern Myanmar have left 47 government soldiers dead and dozens more wounded, state media reported Friday.

The fighting with the Kokang rebels began Monday in the town of Laukkai, near the border with China, the state-run newspaper The Global New Light of Myanmar said.

It reported that a total of 73 government troops had been wounded in the clashes between Monday and Thursday but didn't provide any information about casualties among the rebels or civilians.

Nepal-India border security meet begins in Pokhara

POKHARA: Nepali and Indian officials are holding a joint secretary-level meeting in Pokhara to discuss security-related issues on the open border between the two countries on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Sunday appealed to the opposition parties including UCPN-Maoist, who are boycotting the Constituent Assembly proceedings, to return to the negotiating table.

Two people critically injured in Truck accident

DAMAULI: Two people including a driver were seriously injured when a truck laden with cement met with an accident at Yampa of Bandipur Municipality-5 along the Prithvi Highway on Friday night.
Police identified the injured persons as the truck driver Bikash Chaulagain (26) of Hetauda Municipality-11 and truck owner Dhan Prasad Acharya (36) from the Municipality-6.

Egyptian security forces killed 47 Islamic militants in the country's Northern Sinai

CAIRO: Egyptian security forces killed 47 Islamic militants in the country's Northern Sinai on Friday in one of the biggest operations in the region in months, security sources said.

Apache helicopters killed 27 militants from the Sinai Province group, which pledges allegiance to Islamic State, the ultra-hardline militants who have seized swathes of Iraq and Syria, the sources said.

Hours later, soldiers shot and killed 20 militants, said the sources.

At least 19 people were reported dead and 24 were missing after a TransAsia Airways

flight from Taipei to Kinmen hit an elevated highway and then plunged into the Keelung River in Taipei Wednesday.

The plane, an ATR-72-600 barely one year old, took off from Taipei Songshan Airport at 10:53 a.m. with 53 passengers and five crew members on board but crashed just ten minutes later. Passengers included two children and two groups totaling 31 Chinese tourists on their way home to Xiamen in Fujian Province.

Two motorcycle-borne robbers looted Rs. 1.8 million rupees from a woman at Mid-Baneshwor in the Capital.

The robbery took place on broad daylight when Sarswati Acharya of Kalanki withdrew the amount from Global IME Bank branch in Mid-Baneshwor at around 11 am today. Acharya was coming out form the bank when the robbers snatched her bag and sped off on the motorcycle.

Police has been searching for the robbers.

Nawalparasi hotelier murdered

NAWALPARASI: A local hotelier was found murdered in Danda jungle of Nawalparai on Sunday. 

Owner of Kawasoti-based Manakamana Hotel, Dipendra Pandey (28), was missing from his home since Saturday evening. 

Police recovered his body in the jungle with the throat slit, this morning. 

Preliminary police investigation revealed that Pandey was attacked with a knife.

The investigators, however, are still clueless about motives behind the murder. 

DSP Nawaraj Adhikari said they have deployed trained sniffer dogs to look into the case. 

Locals had seen the body in the jungle nearby East-West Highway and informed police about the incident. 

Islamic State says it has beheaded second Japanese hostage Goto

TOKYO, FEB 01 - Islamic State militants said they had beheaded a second Japanese hostage, journalist Kenji Goto , prompting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to vow to step up humanitarian aid to the group's opponents in the Middle East and help bring his killers to justice.

"I feel intense indignation at this utterly cruel and despicable act of terrorism," a grim-faced Abe told an emergency Cabinet meeting early on Sunday, shortly after a video surfaced purporting to show the beheading of Goto, after the failure of international efforts to secure his release through a prisoner swap.
